CSI – Cases of Scientific Inquiry
The Metric Measurement Mystery

A Message from Chief Loehe

6th Grade Investigators:

Last night several crimes took place outside of Bayside Middle School. We have taped off the different crime scenes and each contains valuable pieces of evidence that could possibly crack your case!  Your job will be to closely examine the evidence at your crime scene. I need you to sketch out the scene and take photos of the evidence before it is handled. Make sure you catalogue the evidence carefully too. This includes a detailed description and accurate, metric measurements of each piece of evidence in your CSI data table. We will be bringing along our mobile crime lab to assist you with this.

Remember to be detailed and accurate, agents.  I expect a typed report about what you think happened at the scene of the crime, the names of your victim and perpetrator, all of your investigative data (evidence), and an analysis of the data, evidence, and variables surrounding the case.

I expect this report on my desk by Friday, October 25th. Don’t let me down. These criminals must be brought to science justice!

Chief Loehe

Data Analysis
Look over your data with your fellow investigators. Before writing your police report, determine what you think happened at the scene of the crime, and who committed the crime, using the evidence to support your suspicions.

What happened at the scene of the crime?

How does my evidence support this?

Who committed the crime?

How does my evidence support this?

Once you have closely analyzed the data, it is time to write your case report (conclusion), you must include:
ü  A detailed description of the crime scene.
ü  What you believed happened.
ü  How the evidence you found supports what happened. YOU MUST INCLUDE ALL EVIDENCE!
ü  Accurate data tables of all evidence collected.
ü  Pictures from the crime scene.
ü  A description of your suspects and a data table of their measurements.
ü  Who you believe committed the crime and what evidence you have to support this.

ü  Who your victim was, and how you identified them.
