Astronaut Scott Kelly One Year Mission

What happens to the human body when it is subjected to the potential perils of space for long periods of time?

That is what scientists at NASA and around the world are hoping to learn from the Year in Space mission that will send Astronaut Scott Kelly and Cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko for, you guessed it, one year aboard the ISS (International Space Station). While on the ISS during this time, Kelly and Kornienko will participate in a variety of experiments and studies on the impacts of living in space on the human body. This is not only to quench are natural, human curiosity, but to also help us prepare for future, manned missions to Mars, which will take years.

Research done with Astronaut Kelly will prove to be especially interesting because he has an identical twin who is also an astronaut. Therefore, scientists will be administering many of the same tests and experiments to Scott Kelly's brother, Mark Kelly, in order to get an even more accurate comparison of changes in the human body on the Earth versus in space.
