This year we are all at a new school. My name is Mrs. Loehe, and this is my classroom blog. Here you will find a variety of resources to help you navigate your science class with me. Click around and see what my students and I have done in past years. Hopefully, you will feel invigorated and excited about what is to come!
Below is a syllabus for my class this year. I have also posted a copy on your Google Classroom, which you will be joining soon.
I look forward to working with all of you this year.

Greetings and salutations, YOUNG SCIENTISTS!
I am Mrs. Loehe, and this year, will be filled with observations, explorations, and discovery! You will learn about the world and living things around us, as well as a lot about ourselves, through a variety of different resources and labs. The goal of this class is for you to learn and have fun in the WORLD OF SCIENCE. Below is an outline of what we will be learning this year, along with some frequently asked questions and answers.
Stay Inquisitive,
Mrs. Loehe
How do you pronounce your name?
It is pronounced lay, like the potato chips. I am also fine with "Mrs. L."
What do I need for class?
EVERY DAY, BRING THE FOLLOWING:
- Science Textbook (I will give you this)
- A Binder
- Lab Notebook
- Writing Utensils
- Your Brain
What are we covering in this class?
This year's units are as follows:
- Scientific Inquiry: How does science work? What do scientists do to explore the world around us and solve problems? What tools do we use in science for measuring and recording data? How do we stay safe during labs this year?
- Living Things: How are living things organized and classified? What are the characteristics of living things and life?
- Cells: What is a cell? What is its function in plants and animals? What do they do? What are they made of? Who discovered cells, and how can we closely study them?
- Human Body Systems: What are the major systems within our bodies, and what are their functions? Of what organs are they comprised, and how do they work together? What health issues are associated with these systems?
- Ecosystems, Biomes, and Earth’s Resources: What are the relationships between living things and their environments? What types of relationships exist? What cycles occur on our planet? What type of resources are available, and what are their impacts on living things and the environment? How do we impact those resources and the environment?
How will we be graded in your class?
You will be assessed both formatively (in little pieces, like with homework or small lab and activities) and summatively (big tests, projects, quizzes, or labs). Below is a breakdown of the grades. However, some trimesters, percentages may change to reflect weight of quizzes, homework, or projects/labs assigned. We will follow the Park View Middle School grading scale for letter grade designation.
- Projects and Labs: 40%
- Homework: 20%
- Tests: 20%
- Quizzes: 10%
- Science Starters: 10%
What are Science Starters?
Everyday (mostly) there will be a science-related questions or problems for you to solve. You will be given new "Science Starter" sheets every four weeks, where you will put you answers. I will go around and check off that you have attempted to collaborate with your tablemates to solve the problems and recorded your answers. You will not be graded on whether you got them right or wrong but rather if you have completed the Science Starters for the week (one point per day).
What are the expectations in our science lab?
Be safe and respectful to everyone and everything in the classroom. Be accountable for all of your actions and accept all consequences, good or bad. We will brainstorm some more ideas, and you will have a contract to sign, with your parents and/or guardians before you can participate in labs.
What if I need help, or I was not able to finish my homework?
You can always find me during study halls and before or after school (Later this year I will be available at lunch.), so come in and ask if you need help with an assignment. You can also e-mail me at loehejo@masd.k12.wi.us. It is your responsibility to do this and nobody else's! If you are unable to complete your homework, but have attempted it, have a parent or guardian write me a note or e-mail. Otherwise, late homework is unacceptable and points will be deducted from assignments (from the grade earned) each day they are late. Homework that never makes it to me will be marked as missing in the portal and receive no credit. In the case of three late assignments, you will receive a tenth hour, in order to stay after school to play “catch up” on your late work.
